A small rabbit saw the
crow &asked him, "Can I also sit like you &do nothing all day Long?" The
crow answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the
crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and
ate it.
Management Lesson?..........To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be
sitting very, very high up.

Lesson Two
A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the
top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy." "Well,
why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're
packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, found it
actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.
The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.
Finally after a fourth night, he was proudly perched at the top of the tree.
Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the
tree.
Management Lesson?........Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't
keep you there.

Lesson Three
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze
and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow
came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the
pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually
thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for
joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. STOP that ferry for me...!!"

Introduction

Basic Military Training is the first transformational experience every young singaporeanman go through during national service. No experience is more vivid than the process of having our hair shaved and the segregation from our loved ones during the course of training. I have the opportunity of managing and changing young, able boys into mature and tough men at the Basic Military Training Centre. It was a posting I was looking forward to after I was commissioned as an officer as I wanted to provide fresh soldiers a positive first impression of national service. In this sense, BMTC acts as a primary education base which lay the foundation for their future military responsibilities. I am sure many are familiar with the chinese proverb, " A good start is the equivalent of fifty percent success". As such , it is highly important that recruits be provided with a quality head start at BMTC.In order for total quality, it is vital for the system to be championed by principle- centred leadership.

Principle- Centred Learning Environment

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." It's an old axiom , but it's as timely as ever. In fact, we are currently applying the principlein the training and management of our men. The aim in our case is to teach our soldiers the basic military knowledge in an open and thinking environment. In the recent times, there has been a gradual shift in our training paradigm. Soldiers are now equiped with military and soft skills with the undersanding of a given task. It is vital for this method of instruction as real empowerment comes from having both the principles and the practices understood andapplied at all levels of the organization. Principles are the why to do's, the elements upon which applications are built. Practices are the what to do's, specific applications that suit specific situations. Without the comprehension of principles, soldiers will become incapcitated when the situation changes and different practices are required to be successful. Before theinception of the "learning organization" concept, we often teach skills and practices, thespecific how to of a given task. However, teaching practices without principles, we tend to make people dependent on us or others for further instructions and direction. This as a culture of themilitary will definitely breed much detrimental effects on the efficiency and effectiveness of afirm and decisive armed force.

Conclusion

Singapore is a small country with numerous constraints. People are therefore a valuable resource in shaping a strong and stable future. Adopting a principle- centred approach in training the soldiers will stimulate a open and positive learning environment which bodes well for a thinking armed force. A natural starting placewould unmistakably be at Pulau Tekong- Home of the Infantry.

Thus decisive action remains the first prerequisite for success in war. Everybody, from the highestcommander to the youngest soldiers, must be conscious of the fact that inactivity and lost opportunities weigh heavier than do errors in the choice of means.-Truppenfuhrung, German Field Services Regulations 1933

Okie.. type='text'>Surprise!!

What's Interesting?
When pressed for my favourite past time or hobby, it would be meddling with card tricks. It all started when I was six when my father enrolled me in magic lessons at a local community centre. My instructor then was the locally renowned magician koochie. It was there where my interest for card tricks was first nutured. For a curious six year old, the techniques used in those magic tricks were simply amazing. The initial demonstration of the new tricks that were to be learnt at the start of every lesson often left us startled in awe and wonder. I was highly fascinated by the trendy gadgets that was used in the performance of magic tricks. Every family gathering was an opportunity for me, the young magician to showcase my newly acquired equipment and skills. Though a little clumsy, I still managed to pull off a humorous and entertaining show. Of course, the humorous part was due often due to my failure to successfully execute a move accurately. As I grew older, I began to venture more into card tricks that do not require specially modified card packs. Experimenting and devising new and innovative methods of performance soon replaced my fascination for the gadgets. I was more interested in the mathematical manipulations and calculations that accompany the execution of the card tricks. As such, dealing with card tricks has become a natural extension of my love for Math. Today, I am definitely a more deft in performing the tricks given so many years of practice. My interest in the tricks not only have developed my physical agility, it has also improved my swiftness in thought.
